Concrete Stumps

Concrete stumps are a form of isolated pier footing and first began to be used around the 1930s/40s. The were very common during the postwar era of the 50s and 60s.  In the wrong kind of conditions, they are very prone to cracking and deteriorating and once this starts it continues with vigour. The worst possible situation concrete stumps is where they are exposed to ongoing moisture, as this results in the water at the bottom of the stump rising through the stump and causing the steel reinforcement to expand through rusting and blow the concrete stump outwards. This will also be exacerbated in conditions that are within a sub floor and very minimal ventilation available. They are however in the right kind of conditions are very strong and sturdy isolated pier footing.  Cracks can occur in the stumps at any time, as they can also naturally occur through foundation movement.  Cracks stumps can still be extremely strong although the more severe the cracking obviously the more compromised the strength of the stump will be.
