Modern Plasterboard Sheets

Cracks can occur in plasterboard material and very often do, mostly around the openings in walls and also in cornices – mostly the joins at the corners of a room.  These are usually related to shrinkage of internal materials such as wall framing and often thermal changes such as heat build-up.  Cracks appearing in plasterboard linings secured to a masonry wall are also quite common and such cracks are more related to the use of differential materials and the varying rates of contraction and/or expansion.  Bricks can often ‘creep’ and masonry products can contract and expand.  These actions can place a strain on any attached linings made from a less rigid composition, resulting in cracking.  Cracking and ceiling board distortions are more likely to occur where there is no insulation, sarking or ventilation in ceiling voids and especially if metal roofing is in place.
