Gutters & Downpipes

Gutters are usually of a metal material e.g. galvanised, aluminium and zincalume and in rare cases copper. There are several different profiles of guttering and some include ‘Quad’ ‘Hi-front Quad’, ‘Ogee’, ‘Box type’ and ‘Half-Round’ etc. Downpipes can also be metal but in recent times have become predominantly PVC. There are two main profiles for downpipes e.g. round and box type.   As a general guideline, the life span of metal gutters ranges from 25-60 years however various factors can prolong or severely reduce service life.  Metal downpipes have a similar life span but leaf and debris blockages at bends and direct entry into the ground without a PVC above ground connection, can cause earlier deterioration.  Leaf and debris build up, downpipes in place at more than 12m centres (this spacing has been a Building Code requirement for new homes since 1996), inadequate fall to downpipes and shade can cause premature deterioration by way of corrosion which is often not detectable unless the gutters are probed with a sharp object.
